Lina Hogg of Picasso HR has taken over the chairmanship of Suffolk Business Women (SBW) from Yvonne Graham of Ensors.

SBW was started by Beatrice Wilkinson and Yvonne Graham, nearly 20 years ago and at the time was probably the first networking organisation solely for business women in Suffolk.

“It is a privilege to be taking on the reins from Yvonne, who has worked hard, together with the committee, to grow and develop this organisation” said Lina Hogg. She also added “SBW is very special in the variety of events that are organised by the committee of volunteers, from a formal dinner with a motivational speaker to charity events and summer outings. It is this that makes SBW a bit special. Our members benefit from networking with like minded business women and build lasting friendships."

East of England Businesswoman of the year awards - winner announced

More than 180 people attended the prestigious event last night where the 2009 East of England Businesswoman of the Year was officially declared.

The award ceremony, at the Radisson Blu hotel, Stansted, lauded a host of impressive female finalists and saw accolades presented to businesswomen from across the region

With Lloyds TSB Commercial as the main sponsor and the event hosted by the Suffolk branch of the Institute of Directors, the awards have become more hotly contested each year.

The esteemed title of Businesswoman of the Year was awarded to Jane Osbourn, director of Cambridge-based MedImmune Ltd.

The judges said: “What was particularly impressive about Jane was her own unique style of leadership that clearly delivers innovative, creative and sustainable results for everyone involved with the business.”

Linda Baston-Pitt, co-founder of The Old School House Nursery and TLC Ltd, was named Businesswoman Entrepreneur of the Year.

This award recognises women who have founded their own business in the region and achieved appreciable growth with clear further potential.

The judges said: “Linda’s entrepreneurial flair and inspirational leadership have created award-winning businesses that continue to raise professional standards.”

The Young Businesswoman of the Year sponsored by Adnams plc, recognising young women who have displayed enterprise and commerciality in starting a business in the region was awarded to Rachel Ducker, who runs Apparition Marketing & Design Ltd.

Steve Elsom, Lloyds TSB Commercial, said: “As the main sponsor for the East of England Businesswoman Awards, we have seen firsthand just what an incredible wealth of talent and drive is out there within the business community.”

“As a company, we look forward to supporting many of them in their needs in the months and years to come.”

The Beatrice Wilkinson Award sponsored by Suffolk Business Women’s Network was awarded posthumously to Janette Phillips who began her publishing career with Archant where she successfully established Suffolk Business and EADT Suffolk magazines. In 2002, Janette set up her business publishing several respected titles including the IoD Suffolk magazine. Despite her long illness she continued to run her business to her demanding high standards right up until a few weeks before her death.

Agenda - Report on 2008

2008 was a good year for SBW – membership increased to over 100, and we enjoyed a full year’s events, all of which were very successful and enjoyable.

We started in January with a session presented by Alison Kemp on presentation skills, which managed to be both very instructive and great fun.  It was so good that we have invited Alison back again this evening.  Other highlights of the year were the spa evening organised with the help of Ufford Park, having my first taster session of golf at Fynn Valley, and especially the evening at Hintlesham Hall with the psychological magician – and I still have no idea how he ‘persuaded’ me to choose the correct number.  Many thanks to the organisations who helped us by sponsoring these events.

In February 2008, the inaugural Beatrice Wilkinson Memorial Award was given by us as part of our sponsorship of the East of England Business Woman of the Year Award.  This was awarded to Christine Beedle MBE, for her involvement in business over the years, and we were very pleased indeed that she was able to join us at one of our evening meals later in the year to talk about her business and charity interests.

Looking forward to 2009

We have made a start on the programme for 2009, of which this evening is the first event organised by SBW.  We have already booked a lunchtime meeting with Rachel Sloane on 8 April at Morgans, and an evening at Suffolk Food Hall on May 18, which promises to be excellent – we will have a talk by the chef Franck Pontais - the menu choice will include one of Franck's dishes and we hope to have a cookery demo and book signing.  Full details of the Rachel Sloane meeting are on our website, and the May dinner will be there very soon.  We are still working on the programme for the rest of the year – any suggestions gratefully received.

Treasurer’s Report

For a brief summary of our finances for the year to 31 December 2008 click here
The website expenses included the final payment for the construction, plus maintenance costs, so this large expense will not recur in 2009.  The sponsorship relates to the East of England Business Woman of the Year Award, specifically the Beatrice Wilkinson Memorial Award.  We have also sponsored the 2008 Awards, although we agreed to reduce the amount.

There are still some unpaid subscriptions which will probably need to be written off as irrecoverable, but even after taking those into account we made a small surplus for the year.

Committee

Re-election of committee members – all committee members are willing to stand for re-election.  The names and email addresses are all on our website.  As mentioned last year, if anyone would like to join us on the committee, please let us know – we are always grateful for offers of help.

Any other business.
